Today marks the third day of volleyball camp in King City, where coaches Wendy Davis, Debbie Hudson and the Lady Mustangs volleyball team have been working to teach girls about the game of volleyball.
“They're going to get 15 hours of volleyball,” said Hudson of the five-day program that runs from 9 a.m. to noon. “They're going to learn the basic skills, serving, passing, setting and hitting. But more importantly, we want them to learn to love the game.”
With dozens of girls ranging from fifth-graders to tenth-graders, coaches Davis and Hudson are assisted as usual by the current King City High School Lady Mustangs volleyball team.
When asked how the Lady Mustangs became involved in the program, Hudson said jokingly, “It's kind of payback.” She added, “They all came through camp when they were younger. So when they get on varsity they come back and share their expertise.” She noted Courtney Salcido as having come back from her sophomore year in college to help out.
“The kids just remember it very fondly, and they want to come back and share,” Hudson summarized. “They're great instructors and have great enthusiasm.”
The girls attending the camp aren't just King City residents, Hudson said. She noted attendees from Soledad, Salinas and Spreckles. “We have them from all up and down the valley,” she said. “For some of them it's getting an introduction to volleyball and getting to like it. Some may be going out for a team wherever their team is. There are a lot of different interests and reasons to be here.”
