Gonzales athlete headed to Louisiana - Signing Day in Gonzales

The family of Miguel Mendez hosted a party to celebrate his decision to attend Grambling State in Louisiana. Taking time out for a picture are Mendez and his parents, Angel and Maria. - Mendez and friends - Miguel Mendez was joined by his football teammates and friends from Gonzales, Palma, and Hartnell College for a celebration on Saturday night.


GONZALES – Miguel Mendez of Gonzales will soon be leaving California to continue his football career at Grambling State University in Louisiana. The former Palma High School and Hartnell College football player has been offered the opportunity to play for the Tigers as a kicker and punter. Mendez, 19-year-old son of Angel Mendez and Maria Lopez, wants to continue to play football and pursue a degree in economics.

“Playing for Grambling will be exciting because of its football history,” said Mendez. “I have worked hard to become a better kicker, and now I have a chance to play at the next level.”

Mendez, who was ranked in the top 100 in the nation, said his rankings were boosted when he attended Chris Sayler Kicking Camps. There, he received instruction from former University of Buffalo and Buffalo Bills kicker Adam Tanalsky.

“I learned a lot about kicking and how to get ranked from those camps,” Mendez said. “I competed at the camps to get ranked in the top 100 in the nation and was able to reach a top five ranking this
